Hoʻēmi: To reduce, diminish, cheapen.
The name of our shop was derived from the third anahulu, the last 10 waning phases, of the Hawaiian lunar cycle. Similar to these waning lunar phases, the Hoʻēmi Refill Station aims to reduce our reliance on single-use plastics and help us transition into a new phase of sustainable living.
Hoʻēmi Refill Station was created by Heather Kaluna, a Pāhoa native and planetary astronomer who cares deeply about our planet Earth. She believes that the islands should be a model for sustainable living (as it once was prior to Western contact) and hopes to help support this effort with a refill store that caters to residents of Puna. As a planetary scientist, she also believes living sustainably on our planet Earth is important to succeed in planetary exploration.
